Position Overview:
OCR/NLP Engineer Intern
If you are interested in learning Machine Learning and NLP for healthcare from the ground up, this is
the job for you! Cardea Health has a unique combination of clinical and data resources that enable us
to create curated clinical datasets from unstructured physician notes. At Cardea Health, we see the
entire clinical history for patients and use that to extract the relevant information to understand
cardiology treatment pathways. Using a combination of Machine Learning and rule-based approaches,
the data Team at Cardea Health oversee a process that goes from ingestion of free-form notes to data
extraction, ending up with comprehensively evaluated structured data.
What you will do:
- Build an OCR pipeline to process PDF documents
- Detect and extract PHI entities from unstructured text with NLP models
- Use obfuscation to de-identify data, such as PHI text
- Develop named entity recognition of clinical and biomedical entities - from symptoms & drugs to anatomy, social determinants, labs and imaging.
- Resolving entities to the semantically nearest code of terminologies including SNOMED-CT, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, RxNorm, LOINC, UMLS.
- Customizable detection, de-identification, and obfuscation of sensitive information from free text, PDF documents, scanned reports, and DICOM images.
- Develop and integrate an operational data pipeline to apply OCR/NLP methods on near real- time data sets and EMR API responses.
What you will need:
- Targeted Disciplines – Health Informatics, Bio-Informatics, Comp-sci/Software Engineering.
- Strong programming skills in SQL and Python/NodeJS.
- Proficient with AWS cloud serverless services – AWS Step functions, AWS Lambda, AWS Athena, AWS Textract, AWS Comprehend Medical
- Familiar with healthcare ontologies (ICD-10, SNOMED-CT, LOINC, RXNORM).
- Familiar with encryption methods and deidentification algorithm for aggregating protected, sensitive information (PHI).
- ETL development standard practices, such as explicit source-to-target mappings, pattern- based and parameter-driven programming.
- Familiar with GIT and CI/CD frameworks for deployment.

Position Overview:
The Business Development Intern will be a driving force within our sales outreach. Primary
responsibilities will be to identify potential clients, establish new prospective client relationships and
drive new revenue opportunities for the company.
The Business Development Internship also serves as a launch point for exploring multiple areas and
opportunities in our rapidly growing start-up. We are looking for outgoing candidates with passion for
entrepreneurship, the ability to learn quickly and execute with excellence, organization skills, attention
to detail, and superior communication skills. The ideal candidate will be organized, have a bias for
action, and have a deep commitment to growth and learning. This role will involve a dynamic range of
initiatives that have a tangible and significant impact on the company.
What you will do:
- Identify, generate, and advance leads for B2B marketing
- Organize and maintain a CRM network
- Initiate and monitor sales through cold email campaigns
- Work 35 hours per week, remotely, organized to fit your schedule
What you will need:
- Ability to communicate effectively in and across teams; must possess strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Track record of results-oriented achievements and successful strategy execution

- A strong academic record (at least 3.5 GPA)
